আজকের পৃথিবীতে ইংরেজি ভাষার গুরুত্ব অপরিসীম। শিক্ষা, কর্মক্ষেত্র, প্রযুক্তি কিংবা আন্তর্জাতিক যোগাযোগ—প্রায় প্রতিটি ক্ষেত্রেই ইংরেজি আমাদের নতুন সুযোগের দরজা খুলে দেয়। বলা যায়, ইংরেজি ভাষা ভালোভাবে জানলে গোটা পৃথিবীটাই যেন আমাদের হাতের মুঠোয় চলে আসে।
কিন্তু ইংরেজি শেখা মানে শুধু বই পড়া বা লিখতে পারা নয়। আমাদের অনেকেই বছরের পর বছর ইংরেজি পড়াশোনা করি, পরীক্ষায় ভালো নম্বরও পাই, কিন্তু যখন ইংরেজিতে কথা বলতে বলা হয় তখন আমরা অনেক সময় দ্বিধায় পড়ে যাই। কারণ ভাষা কেবল মুখস্থ করে শেখা যায় না; ভাষাকে নিজের ভেতরে আত্মস্থ করতে হয়। যেমন আমরা বাংলা ভাষা বলি—তা তো আমরা মুখস্থ করে বলি না, স্বাভাবিকভাবেই বলি। ইংরেজির ক্ষেত্রেও ঠিক সেইভাবেই অনুশীলন ও ব্যবহার করতে হবে।
